A Middle Sackville resident recently avoided becoming a victim of a potential scam after a man claiming to be an HVAC salesperson knocked on their door and asked to enter the home to determine whether they qualified for a heat pump program.
The resident did the right thing by refusing entry and contacting the company being represented, only to learn that no employees were canvassing the area.
If someone comes to your door offering an unsolicited service, help protect yourself and your home by following these tips: Check for legitimacy by asking for company issued identification and a seller's licence or registration. Verify the person's name and the company they represent. Be skeptical and be cautious of anyone who pressures you to make a decision on the spot. Take time to research the seller and their products. Protect your personal information. Never share personal details or provide copies of bills, financial documents, or statements. Trust your instincts and only allow access to your property to people you know and trust. If something doesn't seem right, don't hesitate to verify the information independently before opening your door or sharing any information.
Anyone with information about criminal activity in their community is encouraged to contact their nearest RCMP detachment or local police. To remain anonymous, contact Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers, toll-free, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips.
